Kangerlussuaq

Air Greenland welcomes you to Kangerlussuaq

The airport was originally an American air base during WWII, but today it is a civilian airport and the portal to Greenland, with flights both domestic and to Denmark. You can feel the pure, dry Arctic air and see mountain tops that are more than 20 km away as soon as you walk down the steps of the aircraft.

Musk-oxen and reindeer ahead
Due to favourable climatic conditions and rich vegetation, there is abundant wildlife around Kangerlussuaq. If you join a car or bus tour of the area you will suddenly find yourself in close proximity to a musk-ox or five. One of the largest musk-ox populations is found in the Kangerlussuaq region. The animals, with their large horns and impressive, long coats may appear good-natured, but you should keep a distance of at least 30 – 40 metres. If they feel threatened, they start running and they can move very fast, despite their weight of 3-400 kilos. There are also plenty of reindeer in the area and you may even meet an Arctic fox or hare – even on a short walk around the airport.

The inland ice is only 30 km away – and it is enormous
Kangerlussuaq is one of the places in Greenland where you are closest to the inland ice and where you can also climb on the ice. The trip can be made on foot, but then you must also reckon on spending a couple of nights in your tent on the way. You could also make the trip on a bicycle taking the gravel tracks and trails, or take a car and/or special vehicle depending on the time of year. Regardless of how you get there, something wonderful will be waiting. A wall of ice, vertical and rugged with turquoise-blue melt water cracks and huge claps of thunder when chunks of ice break off. Keep your distance – the inland ice is a phenomenon that should be experienced from a suitable distance. If you go up onto the ice, follow the marked routes. From here there is a wide, white panorama view of the entire horizon.

Meetings, conferences and special arrangements. Kangerlussuaq is the place to go
Kangerlussuaq is just a 4 – 5 hour flight from Denmark and the USA. The fine hotel and conference facilities make Kangerlussuaq a different and exciting venue for an arrangement. Here, it is possible to combine concentrated meeting activities with Arctic challenges all year round. Something that is not found in many other places. At the same time, Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, and Ilulissat with its enormous icebergs are just a 1-hour flight away from Kangerlussuaq.
