Narsarsuaq

Air Greenland welcomes you to Narsarsuaq

Narsarsuaq was originally established as an American air base during WWII, but today it is a civilian airport and the portal to South Greenland. There are year-round connections to Denmark and during the summer there are several weekly flights to Iceland. Narsarsuaq is not a town or settlement in the traditional sense, but an airport area with facilities such as hotel, hostel, shop and restaurant. Nevertheless, there is plenty to see and do.

By boat to the old Norse settlements
On the other side of the fjord, only a 30-minute boat trip away is the small settlement of Qassiarsuk, which was called Brattahlid 1,000 years ago. It was here that the Icelandic farmer Erik the Red settled around the year 980 AD and together with his countrymen he founded what he called East Settlement (Østerbygden). You can see reconstructions of farms and of the first Christian church in Greenland. After another hour’s sailing and an hour’s walk, you arrive at the place where the Norse settlers built their bishopric with its cathedral. They could not have found a more beautiful spot, with fertile, green slopes leading down to the blue fjord.

There is a lot of ice here, too
This is one of the few places in Greenland, where you can actually walk to the edge of the inland ice, but you have to be fit. The walk takes about 6-7 hours and on the way you have to climb a steep mountainside of 300 metres, but the view is well worth the effort. A more comfortable, but no less impressive way to experience the ice is by boat. The Qoorooq Glacier calves at the head of the fjord nearby, but before you get there, you have to weave your way between countless icebergs. When the skipper shuts down the engine, the only sound you can hear is the ice creaking – and perhaps the hoarse cry of the raven.

Mountain bikes, kayaks and fishing
Rent a bike or a kayak and make your own adventures. Or take a fishing rod down to the fjord and take up the challenge with some of the silvery Arctic charr that abound in the waters here.
