Air Greenland welcomes you to Paamiut
A branch of the Gulf Stream passes Paamiut, so the sea around the town never freezes over. The main industry is of course fishing and the waters by the town are home to the largest population of whales in Greenland. The best chance of spotting whales is in late summer and early autumn, when there is almost a whale-guarantee.
Here, it’s nature that counts
Strictly tourist-wise, Paamiut is not the most visited place in Greenland, but this means there is more room for the individual traveller. The scenery is typical of South Greenland, with rounded mountains and more or less ice-filled fjords. The heads of the fjords are particularly green and lush. There is abundant bird life and in addition to many sea birds there are both falcons and sea eagles. There are plenty of good walks and don’t say no, if you get a chance to take a boat trip to the head of the Kvane Fjord. It’s a long trip, but very beautiful.
