Air Greenland welcomes you to Qasigiannguit (JCH)
Being located deep in Disko Bay, Qasigiannguit has a really good climate. The air is dry and it can be quite warm in the summer. It winter it is usually protected from violent snow storms. The town is one of the oldest in Greenland and the town’s museum is located in one of the old buildings from the 1700’s. Traces of settlements going back 4000 years can be found in the region and there is much more about this exciting history in the museum. But the town is full of life, with a hotel, shops and restaurant – just at its own pace.Endless choice of walks
The undulating countryside between the town and the inland ice about 30 km away is richly vegetated and very suitable for day trips and walks taking several days. There are trails from the town leading to e.g. Laksebugt (Salmon Bay), and the several-day long walks are well described both in books and on hiking maps. A really good walk goes from the settlement of Ilimanaq north of Qasigiannguit. Take a boat one way and follow the coast the other way. Regardless of what you chose, the view on all sides is impressive.
In winter, dog sledding is the thing to do
The countryside is the same – but in winter and spring it is white instead of green. If the sea freezes over, it’s also possible to take a dog sled trip to, e.g. the abandoned settlement of Akulliit. You can spend the night here and many of the restored houses now function as summer cottages for the previous inhabitants who now live in Qasigiannguit.
