Air Greenland welcomes you to Qeqertarsuaq (JGO)
The island of Disko is large – about 15,000 square kilometres. But there is only one town, which has about 1,000 inhabitants and one settlement, Kangerluk, which has 60 inhabitants so there is plenty of space for everyone. The town of Qeqertarsuaq was the centre for European whaling in Greenland in the 1700’s and 1800’s, but there is fortunately still plenty of opportunity to experience whales. You can actually stand on the shore and watch them play amongst the icebergs.
Can you ride a dog sled in the summer?
Yes, in Qeqertarsuaq you can. Behind the town, the mountains stretch up to a height of 7-900 metres and up there, there is inland ice as far as the eye can see. You can walk up there or get a lift with a helicopter. Then you can take off with ten eager dogs and a skilled dog sled driver while the midnight sun shines. All the while, you have a view of Disko Bay, deep blue with countless icebergs and the huge icebergs near Ilulissat 100 kilometres away stand sharp in your sights.
You can just go on a nature-walk
The area is characterized by high, table-shaped basalt mountains and rich vegetation, which is otherwise only found in the southernmost parts of Greenland. The terrain is easy to walk in, but it can sometimes be difficult to cross the streams that cut deep into the landscape. Walk up or down stream to find a place to cross. Arktisk Station, an institution under Copenhagen University is located in the town and it is worth a visit. The people here know a lot about Arctic nature.
