Do you love the thrill of speed? Then a snowmobile is just for you. Hard on the throttle and head off into the hinterland for new adventures
Photo Mads Pihl
Race through the landscape. A snowmobile can really shift. In Kangerlussuaq you can hire or participate in a guided tour in the local area and out to the Ice Sheet, which is around 35 km away.
Hard on the throttle and head out into the great white yonder – also in Sisimiut, where the hilly landscape encourages “flights” into the hinterland. Ride over the frozen lake at Spejdersø – and remember dogsleds have the right of way.
Another option is to ride from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut on one of the widest roads in the world – or in the opposite direction. 180 km in one go – or stop overnight in a tent or a hut.
For many Greenlanders the snowmobile has become a popular means of transport during the winter for weekend and recreational trips to the hinterland. In some places the snowmobile has replaced the dogsled, whilst elsewhere these two very different forms of transport happily co-exist. The local tourist offices show the way with maps and suggestions for overnight accommodation and ‘must see’ recommendations.
